Hello Chembur family. Wish you a joyous and safe weekend.
For the past few months, Chemburkars have been under attack by scammers using fake identities and online screens. In the past three months alone, Chemburkars have lost crores to job scams, fake loans, bogus investments, and “digital arrest” rackets.
From college students to senior citizens, the con artists don’t discriminate. They exploit trust and urgency.
This Scam Awareness Edition aims to educate Chemburkars about scammers’ modus operandi and equip them with the essential dos and don’ts to help them stay scam-proof.
📃THE SCAM PLAYBOOK — HOW THEY TARGET YOU
Every scam in the area starts with one of these three hooks:
1. Greed: “You’ll earn ₹10,000 a day from home.”
2. Fear: “You’re under investigation, pay to avoid arrest.”
3. Desperation: “Your loan or job approval just needs one last fee.”
If you hear any of the above — STOP. They’re not helping you; they’re hunting you.
✅THE SMART CITIZEN’S DO’S
Verify everything: Always cross-check with official websites or helplines — especially for banks, police, or government departments.
Pause before you pay: Real institutions don’t rush you. If someone says “transfer now or lose it,” don’t.
Use only official payment links: No UPI to individuals for jobs, loans, or investments. Ever.
Report fake job groups and websites: Forward suspicious WhatsApp groups or Telegram links to cybercrime.gov.in.
Secure your online life: Enable two-factor authentication. Update passwords quarterly. Don’t reuse old ones.
Talk openly: If you get a shady offer or message, discuss it with a family member or neighbour. Silence protects scammers.
❌ THE HARD DON’TS
Don’t pay “processing fees” for jobs, loans, or government benefits.
Don’t believe anyone promising guaranteed returns — not even relatives.
Don’t click on links or apps sent by strangers — even if they seem official.
Don’t share OTPs or bank details — no bank or cop ever asks for them.
Don’t fall for urgency — that’s the oldest trick in the scam playbook.
👴🏻👵🏻FOR SENIOR CITIZENS — EASY, DAILY HABITS THAT WORK
Never take unknown calls claiming to be from banks, police, or courier companies. If they sound official, hang up, call your bank’s number on the card, or call 1930 (the cyber helpline).
Keep one trusted person (family/neighbour) aware of all your online transactions. A quick check before clicking or paying saves lakhs.
Use one phone only for banking. No social media or random apps on that device. Keep it “clean.”
Block strangers on WhatsApp or Telegram. Anyone offering work-from-home jobs, loans, or “investment schemes” is a scammer.
Keep your children informed. If you get a message about money, prizes, or threats — send a screenshot to them first. Let them check it before you respond
🕵🏻IF YOU SUSPECT A FRAUDSTER
1. Don’t confront or alert them:
Gather proof — screenshots, phone numbers, payment slips.
2. Report to:
Cyber Helpline: 1930
Website: cybercrime.gov.in
Chembur Police Station: Walk in or call 022 2529 5677
3. Notify your bank and freeze suspicious accounts.
☹️IF YOU’VE ALREADY BEEN DUPED
Call 1930 immediately. Timing is everything.
File an FIR at Chembur Police Station or online.
Inform your bank the same day.
Keep evidence intact — messages, screenshots, transaction slips.
Don’t hide it. Reporting early increases the chance of recovery.
BOTTOM LINE
Of course, Chemburkars are smart. Let’s start acting like one. If it sounds too good, too urgent, or too official — it’s a scam.
Pause. Verify. Report.
Thank you for your time.
Forward this to each and everyone you care about.
