Happy Weekend Chembur Family
The Mumbai Monorail, the elevated transit link between Chembur and Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk is set to run again soon after being closed for upgrades since September 2025. The system was kept shut to overhaul signalling, test new rakes, and improve safety after repeated breakdowns and technical issues.
It’s a familiar story: starts with promise, breaks down, and restarts with new hope.
Infrastructure vs Everyday Use
The monorail’s projected utility has always been debated: it was envisioned as a feeder service meant to complement local trains and metro lines, but inconsistent operations and sparse usage have left many questioning its relevance. Since its launch in 2014, the monorail has faced recurring technical problems, stalled trains, evacuations, and service suspensions, including a shutdown from September 2025 for major upgrades.
Despite investment in new rakes and signalling upgrades, ridership has historically been low compared to other transit options.
A Simple Check
Do you find the monorail useful, or irrelevant?
What It Comes Down To
Infrastructure is defined by its reliability and integration. Without those, it’s merely a project in limbo. So far, the monorail is still a question mark rather than a dependable solution.
The true cost of failed infrastructure isn't just the budget overrun; it's the slow erosion of public trust
