Chembur Mangroves Polluted by Cement Slurry from Mixing Plant; Activists Accuse Authorities of Inaction
Environmental activists have sounded the alarm over cement slurry from a mixing plant in Mahul, Chembur, being directly dumped into the nearby mangroves. Despite repeated complaints lodged with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and police, the authorities are allegedly failing to take action. A video circulated on social media shows the slurry flowing into the mangroves near the Mumbai Police Automobile Junkyard on BPT Salt Pans Road, Mahul. The environmental group Mumbai Matters posted the clip on X, emphasizing that coastal mangrove forests are vital natural defenses against storm surges, for protecting shorelines, and mitigating climate change impacts. The BMC's official X handle stated the complaint was forwarded to the M-East ward. However, M-East ward officer Ujwal Ingole claimed the area is under M-West ward, while M-West officer Shankar Bhosale stated no complaint had been received. Residents and activists allege that this illegal discharge has been ongoing for years. Chembur activist Satish Shetty stated that companies intentionally release wastewater to avoid using their in-built dewatering systems. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is reportedly seeking a response from officials regarding the matter.
Chembur Man Loses ₹7.8 Lakh in Fake 'Google Task' Job Scam
A 30-year-old Chembur resident lost ₹7.8 lakh in a major cyber scam involving a fake "Google task" online job racket. The man, who works for a private credit company, was initially contacted via WhatsApp on September 7 with an offer for paid restaurant reviews ₹40 per review. After receiving small initial payments like ₹120 and ₹200, following instructions in a Telegram group named "Google Mission India 190," the job appeared legitimate. The fraudsters then introduced "investment tasks," convincing the victim to transfer multiple larger sums, from ₹15,000 to ₹2 lakh, via UPI and IMPS to different accounts. Each time, they claimed an "error" required more money to release his supposed commissions. The scam was exposed when the victim refused further payments and was blocked by the group. He reported the incident to the national cybercrime helpline (1930) and filed a formal complaint at the Chembur Police Station. Authorities emphasize that scammers use small initial payments to build trust before extracting large sums and urge citizens to verify all online job offers before making any financial transactions.
Chembur Records Mumbai's Worst Air Quality with 'Poor' AQI
While Mumbai's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the 'moderate' category on Wednesday morning (at 138), Chembur recorded the highest AQI at 229, placing it in the 'poor' category along with Bandra (226). The city's average AQI saw a small dip, but the pollution level has been steadily rising post-monsoon, a trend that is expected to worsen as winter approaches due to slowing wind patterns.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received 355 declarations of manual scavenging from the M East and M West wards, which include Chembur and Govandi, in a city-wide survey. This starkly contrasts with the civic body's maintained statistics of zero cases in previous years. The declarations were submitted by a labour organization on behalf of workers who clean open and closed drains, chambers, and sewer lines, often in hazardous conditions without adequate safety gear before the monsoon. A worker from Chedda Nagar in Chembur, Amber Kale, stated he has been doing this work since 2005 in the eastern suburbs, including Chembur, describing the lack of safety equipment and common health ailments from stepping into open gutters and scooping out waste. The nature of the work, which often includes cleaning storm water drains, may clash with the BMC's narrow official definition of manual scavenging, a definition the submitting organization intends to challenge.
First Phase of Metro 2B Set to Launch in December, Connecting Mandale to Chembur
The first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 2B—a crucial east-west link—is on track to become operational by December. This initial 5.3-km stretch runs between Mandale and Diamond Garden in Chembur, with trial runs currently underway. This section is part of the larger 23.6-km Line 2B that extends from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) aims to open the second phase (DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar) by next summer, leaving only the central section, which includes stations in Chembur, pending for a later date.
