Chembur in the News

  • Decades after retirement, Chembur school teachers still stuck in legal battle

Teachers who retired from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School in Chembur are still fighting a prolonged legal battle over pending dues and service-related disputes, with the matter dragging on for decades. Despite retiring years ago, they continue to pursue the case in court, highlighting how delays have left them without closure or rightful benefits long after their service ended.

  • Deonar dump clean-up to unlock 110 hectares in Chembur

A large-scale biomining plan at the Deonar dumping ground will process 185 lakh tonnes of legacy waste and free up around 110 hectares of land within Chembur. The project is expected to significantly change the area’s landscape over time, with potential for redevelopment and improved living conditions once the waste is cleared. While the clean-up is a long-term exercise, it directly impacts land use and future development potential in Chembur.

  • Monorail reboot on Chembur route with upgrades and planned restart

The 19.54 km monorail corridor starting from Chembur to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk is being readied for a restart after being shut since September 2025 due to repeated technical failures. The line is undergoing a full overhaul with new trains, upgraded CBTC signalling, and improved safety systems, with trials currently underway and a relaunch expected soon pending final approvals. The route, which connects Chembur through Wadala into central parts of the city, is being positioned for a more reliable comeback after years of breakdowns and low ridership.

  • Chembur Naka Metro station closer to opening as safety nod process begins

The Chembur Naka station on Metro Line 2B has entered the final stage before opening, with authorities seeking inspection from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety for final clearance. Located near the V N Purav Marg monorail station, the stop is part of the Mandale stretch and is expected to open once approvals come through, likely around the monsoon. Its proximity to the monorail will create a direct interchange point, improving last-mile connectivity for commuters in the area.

  • Chembur civic pool shut for 10 days, no reopening timeline yet

The General Arunkumar Vaidya swimming pool in Chembur has been shut for over 10 days after a leak was detected, with authorities still unable to trace the source. There is currently no clarity on when it will reopen, raising concerns among regular users, especially as summer demand peaks. Alternative pools offered in Vikhroli, Wadala and Dadar have been called impractical due to travel time and cost, while swimmers fear the issue could lead to a prolonged shutdown if repairs escalate.

  • 178-tonne steel span installed over Harbour Line for Chembur-bound Metro 2B

A key section of Metro Line 2B moving toward Chembur hit a major milestone after MMRDA installed a 178-tonne steel span across the Central Railway Harbour Line between Kurla and Tilak Nagar. The 41.5-metre-long structure was launched during a scheduled railway block, ensuring that regular train services continued without disruption. Part of the Saraswat Nagar–Chembur stretch, this complex operation involved heavy-lift cranes and precise coordination, marking critical progress on the corridor that will link Chembur with major transit routes across the city.

  • Minority girls’ engineering college in Anushaktinagar gets push to speed up work

The proposed engineering college for minority girls in Anushaktinagar, Chembur has been asked to be fast-tracked, with Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar directing officials to accelerate construction. The project, aimed at boosting technical education access for minority women, was reviewed at a state-level meeting where delays were flagged and quicker execution was emphasised. The push signals renewed focus on getting the long-pending institute moving on ground.

  • Hot, sticky week continues with rising heat ahead in Chembur

The past week stayed consistently hot and humid across Chembur, with temperatures around 32–34°C, hazy skies and no rainfall, making conditions feel heavier than usual through the day. The coming week follows the same pattern but slightly harsher, with temperatures expected to touch 34°C and humidity staying high, especially in the afternoons. Skies will remain mostly clear to hazy, with no rain in sight, meaning the heat will continue to build with little relief.
