Chembur in the News

  • Heatwave Sparks Blaze on Hillock Near Tata Power Chembur

A sudden spike in temperatures to 40°C has led to a series of forest fires across the city, including a significant blaze reported Monday evening on the hillock near Tata Power off Chembur. While the largest fire occurred in Aarey, local authorities are investigating "deliberate mischief" as a potential cause for these outbreaks, noting that many fires are starting above established fire lines. Experts suggest that along with the extreme heat and dry grass, the blazes may be triggered by human negligence or even intentional attempts to clear land for encroachment, posing a direct threat to the area's remaining green cover and air quality.

  • LPG Shortage Hits Local Kitchens: Eateries Forced to Slash Menus

The escalating commercial LPG crisis has begun to hit the local dining scene, with several restaurants in the area facing potential shutdowns as cylinder supplies dry up. Across the city, approximately 35% of eateries have already closed their doors, while others—including iconic decades-old establishments—have been forced to reduce their menus to just four essential items to conserve gas. With vendors reportedly supplying only one cylinder per month against a typical requirement of three per day, many local hotel owners are struggling to stay afloat. While some are experimenting with induction cooktops and electric stoves, infrastructural constraints and the high-intensity needs of Indian cooking have made it difficult for small and medium-sized outlets to maintain their full service.

  • Major Developers Transform Chembur’s Cultural Legacy into Mumbai’s New High-End Postcode

The neighborhood is undergoing a dramatic transformation as historic industrial and cinematic landmarks—most notably the iconic R.K. Studio—are being reimagined as high-end residential hubs. Driven by a wave of redevelopment from major players like Godrej Properties, The Wadhwa Group, and Chandak Group, these legacy plots are transitioning from heritage sites into "signature addresses" featuring modern amenities and expanded open spaces. This shift is turning aging structures and underutilized land into a premium micro-market, attracting homebuyers who value the area's cultural prestige while seeking the upgraded lifestyle offered by new luxury towers.

  • Crucial SCLR Extension Set for April Opening to

After facing multiple construction delays, the 1.2km Vakola-BKC elevated road—a critical link in the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension project—is finally slated to open this April. This new stretch is designed to bypass the chronic bottlenecks at Vakola Junction, providing a seamless overhead route for motorists traveling between the Eastern Express Highway and the business district. For Chembur residents, this completion marks a major milestone in the Phase 1 rollout, promising to significantly slash travel times and eliminate the stagnant bumper-to-bumper traffic usually encountered when approaching the BKC connector.

  • Air quality in the neighborhood has seen significant volatility recently, with the local AQI hitting a peak of 268 (Moderate to Poor) on March 3rd before stabilizing into a more acceptable range. Over the past week, readings have frequently hovered between 113 and 180, often placing the area in the "Poor" category due to high concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants. While recent data shows a dip toward 82 (Moderate) during afternoon sea breezes, health experts remain cautious, noting that current PM2.5 levels can still be nearly 3 times higher than WHO guidelines. Residents are advised to monitor these shifts, as stagnant air in the early mornings continues to pose mild risks for those with respiratory sensitivities.
