Happy Weekend Chembur Family.
A 72-year-old cardiologist from our area was duped of ₹9.49 lakh in a cyber fraud linked to a fake gas bill message. It started with a WhatsApp message about a pending gas bill. The message created urgency, warning of disconnection.
He was then asked to download an APK file. That’s where things changed. The file gave scammers access to his phone, including banking details and OTPs. The money was gone.
This isn’t about being careless.
Scams like these are designed to look official and create urgency. That’s exactly why even aware, experienced people fall for them. Keep this in mind, a few simple checks can prevent this entirely.
A Simple Rule
No bill update comes via random WhatsApp numbers
Never download APK files from messages
Urgency is a red flag
When in doubt, verify using the official number
One wrong tap is all it takes. Let’s not make it.
