Chembur in the News

  • My Home Group Makes Grand Entry into Chembur Real Estate

As part of a massive ₹37,500 crore pan-India expansion, Hyderabad-based real estate giant My Home Group has officially entered the Mumbai market with a strategic focus on Chembur. The group has secured a prime joint development project in the neighborhood, contributing to a combined 2.8 million sq. ft. development potential alongside their Vile Parle venture. This Chembur-centric foray is set to deliver premium to luxury residential spaces, forming a key part of the group's ₹11,500 crore Mumbai portfolio. By targeting Chembur’s high-growth redevelopment landscape, the developer aims to replicate its South Indian success and establish a significant footprint in one of Mumbai’s most dynamic residential hubs.

  • Raymond Realty Bets Big on Chembur with New Dedicated Subsidiary

Raymond Realty has officially signaled its aggressive expansion into the Chembur real estate market by getting board approval to invest in its newly formed, wholly-owned subsidiary, Chembur Realty Limited. Incorporated specifically to tap into the area's high potential, the new entity will focus on redevelopment projects and premium residential and commercial developments within Chembur. By establishing this dedicated arm, Raymond aims to streamline its operations and mitigate risks while solidifying its footprint in what it identifies as one of Mumbai’s fastest-growing residential hubs.

  • High Court Warns MPCB of Liability for Future Gas Leaks at Chembur’s RCF Plant

The Bombay High Court has sent a stern warning to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), stating it will be held strictly liable for any future gas leak incidents at the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) plant in Chembur. Hearing a suo motu petition triggered by reports of Chembur residents suffering from breathlessness and skin irritation on September 8, 2025, the court dismissed claims that no leak occurred despite a thick haze and chemical odors reported within a 5km radius of the plant. Invoking the "horrors of the Bhopal gas leak," the bench emphasized that the state would face "aggravated liability" if local residents are put at risk again, specifically highlighting that authorities failed to provide immediate medical reports for those affected in the Chembur-Trombay belt.

  • Chembur Resident Swindled in ₹11.5 Lakh Online Stock Trading Scam

A 58-year-old Central Railway officer residing in Chembur (East) has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing ₹11.5 lakh to a fake stock market investment scheme. The victim, a station manager, was lured into a WhatsApp group titled 'Stock Market Education' where a fraudster impersonating an expert convinced him to download a bogus trading app called 'PZENA INV'. Despite the app displaying a fabricated profit of ₹16 lakh, the Chembur resident was unable to withdraw his funds and was pressured to deposit more. Realizing the trap, he approached the Cybercrime Police Station in Chembur, where an FIR has been registered as authorities track the digital trail of the scammers.

  • Chembur Pedestrians and Shopkeepers Left Fending for Themselves Amid Hawker Surge

Residents and shop owners in Chembur are voicing sharp frustration over the resurgence of illegal hawkers, alleging a breakdown in law enforcement following the recent civic polls. Local hotspots like NG Acharya Marg and the Chembur station area have seen footpaths "swallowed" by unauthorized vendors, creating what citizens describe as life-threatening zones that force pedestrians into heavy traffic. Despite repeated complaints to the M-West Ward office, members of the Chembur Merchants Association and local ALMs report that BMC action remains superficial, leading to frequent confrontations between shopkeepers and aggressive encroachers. Highlighting a "deeper urban governance failure," Chembur activists are now demanding a structural audit of local footpaths and more stringent accountability for ward officials to reclaim public spaces from the growing hawker menace.

  • Chembur’s Connectivity to Western Suburbs Set for Major Boost via SCLR Extension

Commuters from Chembur and the eastern suburbs are on the verge of a significantly faster drive to the Western Express Highway (WEH) as the final arm of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension nears completion. This new 1.4-km connector, which includes a sophisticated cable-stayed bridge, will bypass the notorious bottlenecks at Vakola and Hans Bhugra Marg, cutting travel time to the western suburbs and BKC by an additional 30 to 35 minutes. With approximately 85% of the work finished and a commissioning deadline of March 31, 2026, this project completes the seamless "signal-free" vision for the SCLR, further solidifying Chembur’s position as a central, high-mobility hub for professionals traveling to the airport and western commercial district.

  • Chembur Medical Success: 78-Year-Old Resident Walks Again After Critical Hip Surgery

A 78-year-old resident of Chembur has made a "miraculous" recovery at a local multi-specialty hospital after a severe domestic fall left her bedridden and in excruciating pain. The patient, who suffered a complex intertrochanteric femur fracture, faced high surgical risks due to her age and pre-existing heart conditions; however, a specialized medical team in Chembur successfully performed a proximal femoral nailing (PFN) surgery. Utilizing advanced minimally invasive techniques, the surgeons stabilized the hip bone with titanium implants, allowing the elderly woman to stand and walk within just 48 hours of the procedure. This successful intervention highlights the growing expertise of Chembur’s healthcare infrastructure in managing high-risk geriatric trauma cases, providing a vital lease of life to the neighborhood's senior citizens.

  • 11-Day Water Cut to Impact Chembur Residents from January 27

Residents of Chembur (M-West Ward) and Tilak Nagar are advised to brace for a 10% water cut starting tomorrow, January 27, lasting until February 7. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the reduction is necessary to carry out essential annual maintenance on the pneumatic gate system at the Pise Dam, a critical facility that regulates water flow for the city. While the cut is city-wide, it specifically targets 12 municipal wards, including the eastern suburbs where Chembur is a primary hub. Civic officials have urged local residents to store water in advance and use it judiciously throughout this 11-day period to avoid shortages during the maintenance window.

  • Chembur Identity Erased? Builder Slated for Misleading 'Ghatkopar' Project Address

A major controversy has erupted in Tilak Nagar, Chembur, after a developer—Superb Realty—deliberately marketed an under-construction commercial project on the iconic Sahakar Talkies site as being located in 'Ghatkopar East'. The move, which locals labeled a "calculated attempt to inflate property rates" by piggybacking on a neighboring suburb's brand, triggered a massive backlash from Chembur residents and local political leaders. Protesters argued that Tilak Nagar holds a distinct historical and civic identity that cannot be subsumed for commercial gain. Under sustained pressure from the community and local representatives, the builder was forced to remove the misleading banners on January 22, marking a victory for residents determined to protect the geographical integrity of Chembur.

  • Chembur Woman Duped of ₹16.34 Lakh in Elaborate 'Elon Musk' Romance Scam

A 40-year-old resident of Chembur has lost ₹16.34 lakh after being targeted by a sophisticated romance scammer impersonating billionaire Elon Musk on the social media platform X. The fraudster, who promised the victim marriage and a luxurious life in the US, convinced her to transfer funds under the guise of "visa processing fees" and other travel expenses between October 2025 and January 2026. The Chembur-based victim, an insurance company employee, was instructed to purchase multiple Amazon gift cards to facilitate the fake documentation. The scam unraveled when the fraudsters demanded an additional ₹2 lakh for flight tickets, leading the victim to realize the deception and report the matter to the cyber police, who have now registered an FIR for cheating and impersonation.

  • Chembur Chokes: Suburb Surpasses Rest of Mumbai as Worst Pollution Hotspot

Over the past week, Chembur has consistently recorded the city's highest pollution levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surging into the "Severe" category at a peak of 311 on January 19. While the rest of Mumbai experienced relatively better conditions, the local concentration of PM2.5 in Chembur reached nearly six times the safety limit due to stagnant winds and heavy construction dust. Although a slight atmospheric shift has recently brought the AQI down to a "Moderate" 115 as of January 26, the neighborhood remains a focal point for health concerns, with experts continuing to warn Chembur residents against early morning outdoor activities until the smog fully clears.
