Chembur in the News
Chembur Police launch loudspeaker campaign to battle rising LPG booking scams
With residents facing a gas cylinder shortage, our local police have kicked off a specialized awareness drive right here in Chembur to protect neighbors from surging online frauds. Scammers are currently targeting the area with fake booking links and messages, tricking people into sharing OTPs or making payments that drain bank accounts in minutes. To combat this, Chembur police are focusing on high-risk pockets and slum colonies, using loudspeakers and direct outreach to warn residents never to click suspicious links or share banking details. This neighborhood-first initiative aims to curb the financial losses being reported across the suburb due to the recent panic over gas supplies.
More CBSE seats coming to Chembur’s civic schools
Relief is on the way for local parents as the BMC has announced plans to expand its CBSE-affiliated schools, specifically targeting high-demand areas like Chembur. Due to an overwhelming number of applications that far outstripped current seat capacity, the civic body is adding new divisions to ensure more children in our neighborhood can access this curriculum for free. By increasing the number of classrooms at the primary and secondary levels in the Chembur-based civic school, the move aims to accommodate the hundreds of local students currently on waiting lists for the upcoming academic year.
Chembur to get extra dewatering pumps as BMC identifies new local flooding spots
In a major push to prevent monsoon chaos, the BMC is increasing its fleet of dewatering pumps to 547 across the city, with a significant focus on tackling the rising number of waterlogging spots in Chembur. As local low-lying areas continue to struggle with drainage, these high-capacity pumps will be stationed at key neighborhood junctions to flush out rainwater faster. While city-wide desilting of major channels like the Mithi remains a work in progress, this localized boost in pumping power is the primary strategy to keep Chembur's streets from flooding during heavy spells this year.
Massive animal rescue operation follows high-rise fire
A major rescue effort was launched in Chembur after a massive fire broke out on the upper floors of a residential building, leading to the emergency evacuation of over 40 pets. As smoke engulfed the structure, specialized teams worked alongside local emergency services to safely retrieve dozens of animals, including cats and dogs, trapped in the flats. While the blaze caused significant damage to the building, the swift response ensured that the rescued animals were brought to safety, providing immense relief to the residents of the Chembur neighborhood.
Redevelopment of legacy land parcels signals a premium housing shift in Chembur
Our neighborhood is undergoing a major urban makeover as historic land parcels, including former film studios and industrial sites, are being transformed into high-end residential towers. This shift towards premium housing in Chembur is driven by the demand for modern amenities and open spaces, which are rare in other parts of the city. With improved connectivity to major business hubs and the advantage of our local green cover, developers are increasingly focusing on the suburb to replace older, low-rise structures with high-density, integrated projects. While this evolution promises a lifestyle upgrade and more efficient land use, it also puts the spotlight on the need for our local infrastructure and water management systems to keep pace with the rising population.
City’s first ‘Signal School’ opens in Chembur to educate street children
In a pioneering move for the neighborhood, Mumbai’s first Signal School has been inaugurated under the Amar Mahal flyover, specifically designed to bring formal education to children who previously spent their days at traffic junctions. This dedicated facility in Chembur provides a classroom environment equipped with educational materials and basic amenities, aiming to transition kids from the streets into the mainstream schooling system. By setting up this center at a major local transit point, the initiative ensures that marginalized children in the area have immediate access to learning without being displaced from their familiar surroundings.
Chembur roads face monsoon risk as BMC races to complete concretization
While Bandra and Santacruz are predicted to be the hardest hit, Chembur and the eastern suburbs are also bracing for a difficult monsoon due to unfinished roadworks. The BMC’s massive road concretization drive has left several local stretches half-completed, raising serious concerns about waterlogging and traffic snarls once the rains arrive. Although civic officials aim to bring these sites to a "safe stage" before June
Air quality remains in 'Poor' category as daily AQI fluctuates
Local residents continue to breathe heavy air as Chembur’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has consistently hovered in the "Poor" to "Unhealthy" range over the past week. While some days saw a slight dip to moderate levels, the suburb recorded a significant spike on March 22nd with an AQI reaching 141, driven primarily by high concentrations of PM2.5 pollutants. This particulate matter, often three to four times above the WHO safety guidelines, remains a major concern for the neighborhood's sensitive groups and morning walkers.
