Post-Rain Relief: Chembur Air Quality Jumps to 'Moderate' After Day of 'Very Poor' Readings
Following rainfall on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Mumbai experienced a notable improvement in its Air Quality Index (AQI), shifting the overall city reading from the "very poor" to the "moderate" category by Wednesday morning. Chembur specifically saw its AQI improve dramatically to approximately 148, placing it firmly in the "moderate" zone after previously registering "poor" to "very poor" readings, with Mumbai having recorded a high of 341 ("very poor/severe") the day before. This temporary clearing of pollutants is consistent with the effects of rainfall; however, some sources still placed Chembur's AQI slightly higher at 170-172 ("unhealthy" or "very unhealthy"), suggesting sensitive groups should continue to limit outdoor activities.
753 Trees To Be Axed For Chembur–Thane Corridor. Citizens Protest While MMRDA Defends and Assures Legal Compliance
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has defended its plan for tree cutting required for the new elevated road corridor between Chheda Nagar (Chembur) and Thane. The MMRDA assured that the project would adhere to all statutory and legal norms, including securing the necessary permissions from the Tree Authority, despite protests from citizens and greens over the removal of trees along the Eastern Express Highway.
Chembur Senior Citizen, Battling Cancer, Duped of ₹82 Lakh in Fake Online Trading Scam
A Year-old Chembur resident of Suman Nagar has filed a complaint with the East Region Cyber Police after her late husband, Pallavoor Palayil Gopidas (83), who was suffering from cancer, was allegedly defrauded of ₹82 lakh. The scam began on July 11, 2025, when Gopidas was lured into investing in a fake online trading platform named Finadexa by a fraudster who claimed it was government-endorsed and showed fake profits on their website, www.finadexa.com. Gopidas made multiple transfers from his ICICI Bank account before the scam was exposed by his son. After Gopidas's death on October 8, 2025, his widow filed a formal complaint, leading the Cyber Police to register a case against four unidentified persons, including the caller 'Arjun Vaidya,' for cheating and criminal conspiracy.

Chembur Flooding Relief in Sight as Land Hurdles Cleared for Mahul Pumping Station
The BMC is set to begin construction on the Mahul pumping station within two to three weeks after Diwali, as obstacles in land acquisition have been resolved. The civic body will soon compensate the Salt Commissioner and a private owner after securing their agreement to hand over the necessary 6.17 acres of salt pan land. Following a new government policy, the compensation to the Salt Commissionerate was reduced significantly, from a demand of over Rs 100 crore to about Rs 15 crore, and a settlement was reached with the private owner. This project is crucial, as it is expected to prevent monsoon flooding in the Eastern suburbs, specifically resolving waterlogging issues in areas including Chembur. The Mahul pumping station was the last of the eight recommended after the 2005 floods, and delays had led to the project's cost escalating to Rs 605 crore from the initial Rs 403 crore.
56 years old Chembur’s Iconic Sahakar Talkies in Tilak Nagar Demolished for 11-Floor Commercial Tower
Opened in 1968, the iconic single-screen cinema located at the Amar Mahal junction in Tilak Nagar, Chembur, has been demolished, years after closing its operations. The site will be replaced by an 11-floor single commercial tower by Superb Reality, which will include a cinema hall floor with 200 seats. Shilpin Tater, owner of Superb Reality, confirmed the demolition and the plan for the new tower on the MHADA layout plot. The redevelopment of the talkies, which was a long-awaited landmark for residents of Tilak Nagar, Chembur, and Ghatkopar, finally commenced after all of the property's owners agreed to the plan. Old timers fondly remember the talkies, which was also famously associated with the early days of Chhota Rajan.
Firecracker Tests at Chembur’s RCF Confirm Compliance, but Concerns Remain
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), in collaboration with the Awaaz Foundation, tested 25 varieties of firecrackers at Chembur’s RCF grounds on Thursday evening, finding that all were within the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)’s permissible sound limits of up to 120 dB(A) for humans and 145 dB(C) for animals/birds. The annual test, conducted four metres away from each cracker in open grounds, aims to monitor compliance before Diwali. However, the Awaaz Foundation raised significant concerns, noting that real-world noise is often amplified in residential areas compared to the open-ground test site, that actual celebrations involve multiple simultaneous bursts instead of the single-cracker testing method, and that several firecracker packages lacked the mandatory decibel labeling. MPCB officials maintained the scientific consistency of the decibel levels and credited the results to improved manufacturer compliance. The MPCB will monitor noise levels at 45 locations across Mumbai during Diwali, and will take action against manufacturers violating noise norms.
