Chembur in the News

  • 🐍 Chembur Vet Pioneers City's First CT Scan on Indian Rock Python

Chembur-based veterinarian, Dr. Deepa Katyal Engineer, successfully performed the city's first-ever Computed Tomography (CT) scan on a rescued 8-foot-long Indian Rock Python, setting a new benchmark for exotic animal diagnostics in Mumbai. The unique, unsedated procedure was conducted after standard X-rays failed to reveal the full extent of a mysterious jaw injury on the adult female snake, which was found in the Murdbad area of Thane. The CT scan confirmed a severe jaw malocclusion (misalignment) and an older injury, with the python also having lost 60% of its teeth, necessitating a detailed treatment plan before any potential release back into the wild.

  • 🚨Monorail Coach Tilts During Wadala Trial, Highlighting System Woes

A coach of the Mumbai Monorail, which connects Chembur to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk, tilted near the Wadala–GTB Nagar station during a system trial on Wednesday morning. The incident, attributed to a technical fault likely in the new signalling or switching mechanism, occurred while the service was already suspended since September 20 for a comprehensive overhaul and the integration of new technology. No passengers were onboard, but the incident adds to the network's recent history of technical setbacks, including a prior breakdown between Chembur and Bhakti Park stations.

  • 🔥 Level-II Fire Guts Thomas Cook Office in Chembur Corporate Park

A Level-II fire erupted in the early hours of Monday at the Thomas Cook office located in the Corporate Park Building on Sion-Trombay Road, Chembur East. The blaze, reported at 1:38 am, was confined to the approximately 2,000 sq. ft. second-floor office space, causing damage to electric wiring, installations, furniture, records, and false ceilings. Eight fire engines were deployed, and the fire was completely doused by 4:33 am, with officials confirming no injuries were reported, though the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

  • 🚗Chembur Businessman Assaulted at BKC Over EV Parking Dispute

A Chembur-based transporter, Manpreetsingh Rekhi (47), was allegedly assaulted by a group of 11 people at the MMRDA pay-and-park area in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) over a parking row. The incident occurred when Rekhi drove his electric vehicle (EV) to a charging point and requested the group to move their vehicle, which was blocking the way between two EV charging spots. The verbal argument quickly turned violent, and the accused, suspected to be labourers, assaulted Rekhi before fleeing the spot. BKC police has registered a case against the 11 individuals and are currently examining CCTV footage to trace the suspects.

  • 💧 BMC Water Tunnel Starting at Amar Mahal, Chembur, Nears Completion, to Boost Local Supply

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is nearing the completion of two significant underground water tunnels, both of which start at Amar Mahal, to significantly boost water supply and curb contamination in the area and beyond. The 5.5-km Amar Mahal (Chembur)–Trombay High-Level Reservoir tunnel is in its final phase and is expected to become operational as early as next month, directly improving water supply and pressure in Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd, and Deonar. Additionally, the 9.7-km Chembur–Wadala–Parel tunnel, which also originates at Amar Mahal, has recently achieved a final breakthrough in its excavation phase and is anticipated to be fully completed by 2026, further enhancing the water security for Chembur and central Mumbai areas.

  • 🛣️ Eastern Freeway Extension from Chembur Begins to Cut Travel Time to Thane

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has commenced work on a 13.90 km elevated corridor, which serves as an extension of the Eastern Freeway, to provide a seamless, signal-free commute between South Mumbai and Thane. This new elevated road will begin near the landing of the current Eastern Freeway at Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar—a major junction near Chembur—and will extend to Anand Nagar in Thane, passing over the Eastern Express Highway. The project is estimated to be completed in four years and is expected to cut travel time from South Mumbai and its connecting suburbs like Chembur to Thane down to just 20-25 minutes.

  • ⚠️ 22-Hour Water Cut for Chembur Residents on Nov 14-15

Chembur, specifically the M-West ward, along with parts of Ghatkopar and Kurla in the eastern suburbs, will face a 22-hour water supply disruption starting from 10 am on Tuesday, November 14, until 8 am on Wednesday, November 15. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is implementing the cut to carry out essential valve replacement work on the 1,200 mm and 900 mm diameter water main at Khindipada in Bhandup.
